1. The Pastiche Method.
The Pastiche Method of skin analysis is a unique protocol
and
procedure that gives skin treatment professionals a pathway
to
diagnose the leading causes of a variety of skin conditions
effectively, allowing them to then link the skin condition to skin
cells and systems, product composition and treatment methodology.
This unit of learning takes you through the Pastiche pathway
introducing you to the Pastiche flow charts and the first step
towards three dimensional thinking.
2. Introducing the service.
Introducing a new methodology into a clinical service does take
some thought. It is not easy to go from a complimentary service
that takes 15min out of a 1 hour facial to a 1 hour stand alone
chargeable service such as the Pastiche Method of skin analysis.
This class gives you a practical insight into how to introduce
this service to new and existing clients. How to filter the
clients into new categories of service that improves the clinics
profitability and your income.
3. Diagnostic tools and
equipment.
This unit of learning covers the correct protocols and
contraindications
of why skin analysis is conducted away from the facial
chair.
Also covered is the reasons why before embarking on a skin
treatment program (or when the skin is being analyzed) that skin
diagnostic equipment should be used that will confirm diagnosis,
give a pathway to follow and assist in establishing cause of the
skin concern. Skin diagnostic devices provide an understanding of
the severity of the problem, and give a professional point of
reference to start from, and to return as required.
4. Understanding cellular
damage.
How to ascertain the biological level of cellular damage from the
consultation process. How cellular damage can be a reason why
treatments fail to be successful. This lecture is the first
example of
three dimensional thinking and how to carry a leading cause
forward to skin conditions and cells and systems affected by a
leading cause. Cellular damage will dictate the modality choice,
the success of the clinical treatment as well as how many
treatments may be needed to
get the desired result.
5. Diagnostic
characteristics and clues.
The three diagnostic characteristics of Texture, Colour &
Secretions are the foundation of the Pastiche Method of skin
analysis.
This introduction to the diagnostic characteristics will be the
first step
to understanding the depth of which the Pastiche Method of
skin
analysis will take you. Understanding the synergy between cells
& systems of skin is an integral part of your base knowledge
as a
treatment clinician; everything I share with you in future
training units
is based on this knowledge.
6. The power of the
consultation.
The professional consultation can provide so much valuable
information that it can be considered a primary point of
reference. This
information gathering process is two-sided, with both client and
therapist gathering and sharing information that will be the
reference for all future activity.
This first unit covers the demographic profile of the client
including how
to establish the first level cellular damage of the client and
brief look at the first causes of oxidative stress.
7. Consultation process:
Nutrition & general health.
To function optimally, many specialist cells such as the
fibroblast and keratinocyte have specific nutritional
requirements. Essential nutrients such as vitamin C, Omega 3 and 6
are not
metabolised by a cell, and
can only be available to the cell if they are in the clients
eating plan. However, it is not only missing food groups that you
must look for in the consultation but also blocking factors that
will prevent the absorption of nutrients. This is an important
phase of the consultation process.

8.
Consultation process: Genetics, risk factors.
The next genre in the consultation process covers extrinsic
questions regarding the clients UVR exposure, this will help you
ascertain the accumulated levels of cellular damage caused by the
reactive oxygen species of free radicals,
which are instigated by sun burn and unprotected sun
exposure of the clients living environment. The intrinsic factors
of genetic heritage, burn time and ability to tan, hair colour all
contribute to skin cellular damage, skin cancer and pigmented skin
conditions.
9. Consultation process:
Medical history & medications.
Ill health, medications and surgery, contribute to oxidative
stress and the subsequent lipid peroxidation that comes about when
cells and systems are under duress for long periods of time.
Knowing what skin conditions and cells and systems are influenced
by medications and illness is crucial to your base knowledge as a
skin treatment therapist.
10. Consultation process:
Medical conditions & other influencing factors.
Any changes in the endocrine system will accelerate ageing or
alter barrier defense systems and cause lipid dryness, accelerate
superfluous hair growth or cause the innate immune system to
become overactive triggering Rosacea or hormonal mediated acne.
11. Consultation process:
Client concerns and expectations.
Only by evaluating what it is a client hopes to achieve by
attending your clinic and taking advantage of your skin analysis
service will you be able to get a better understanding of how this
client may respond to your suggestions of change. This part of the
client consultation is used as the basis for selling the final
summary of the skin analysis.
12. Viewing the skin: Key
steps & techniques.
The next step in skin analysis is to develop your eyes and
learn a new way of looking at the skin, extending the three
dimensional mind set and viewing pattern you are learning. Already
your diagnostic mind set should be developing, especially after
covering the previous five units on the consultation process. So
when a leading cause has been found, your mind is thinking of the
skin conditions, and cells and systems affected by that leading
cause.
13. Basic majority skin
type determination.
The next phase of the skin diagnostic procedure after all
information has been gathered in the consultation process, is
to determine the basic majority skin type, the skin photo
type including the skins risk for pigmentation and scarring. When
these three intrinsic factors are known, the clinician can move on
to the analysis of the skin conditions. Determine the treatment
contraindications and protocols choose the correct modality, and
write a treatment program.
14. Protocols: Clinical
& client.
Skin type, skin color, and skin risk for pigmentation are the
three intrinsic factors that will determine all protocols and
contraindications for clinical treatments, as well as those
protocols and contraindications for the client’s daily home care
between treatments.
15. Skin colour &
pigmentation risk assessment.
Many of the treatment modalities involve chemical,
heat, light and or electrical impulses, all of which if not
controlled can burn, pigment or scar skin, especially those photo
types that have the ability to tan. Gathering knowledge of the
client’s genetic history and their skins ability to tan is a
critical part of the consultation; it should raise concern and may
even modify the final choice of modality used to treat the skin.
16.
Module one summary
In
this presentation, we will summarise what we have learned to date
with the aid of a virtual client's consultation. We will examine
the items on the consultation form that of particular interest and
are "red flagged". carry the leading causes through to
the flow charts. Summarising the consultation into basic majority
skin type, skin risk for pigmentation, preparatory treatments and
professional referrals.
